Presbyterian aids New Mexico’s efforts to keep COVID-19 transmission rates low

New Mexico’s low positive test rate, combined with adequate testing, is a good indicator that the community is doing well in combating COVID-19, Dr. Jason Mitchell, chief medical officer for Presbyterian Healthcare Services, told The Santa Fe New Mexican.

Mitchell, a member of the state’s Medical Advisory Team, a key unit in dealing with the state’s COVID-19 response, said high positive test rates can be dangerous indicators of unknown disease spread.

If New Mexicans wear masks and maintain social distancing, the state can continue to see improvement in positive test rates and transmission rates below zero.

“If we follow the basics, then we have a lot of hope and we’ll continue to be a successful state,” he said.
